As the Simcoe County population continues to age many older adults are thinking about how best to prepare for this new chapter in their lives.  For 90% of area residents, a big part of the planning and preparation is the ability to age in their current home, while enjoying the dignity and fond memories that go along with it.  From where they might prefer to age, to the modifications they are making to prepare to age in place, this symposium delves into key considerations relevant to new and old homeowners.  Needed are modern solutions to address modern challenges to ensure that social supports for housing and health align with the changing rules needed to facilitate changes ahead.

Specifically, we aim to educate, build awareness, and seek consensus on meaningful and feasible measures to make housing more accessible, and greatly increase funding for home modifications for those with disabilities and older adults.  This will be achieved by convening and creating sectors working together to mobilize action.   The symposium will provide an opportunity to network with experts and groups interested in filling the gaps in our current healthcare model and looking for alternative housing options including co-housing and accessible housing. We will introduce recently formed Simcoe County Senior Housing Alliance and some of its members.

The morning session is focussed on housing and home health care. We will be joined by professionals who will address the need for proper training required to ensure that modifications performed will suit the individual needs of the family involved. We will discuss Aging In Place and the collaboration, business opportunities and new program being launched to capture, train, engage, and sell this burgeoning local market.

This morning session is important for Contractors, Occupational Therapists, Government, Interior Designers, Retailers, Builders, Home Care, Manufacturers, Funders, Real Estate, Academia, Physical Therapists, NFP’s, Media, etc.

Research shows that 30,000+ people in Simcoe County have the need to make changes to their home for reasons related to care.
